“Behind The Candelabra” receives 11 Emmy Awards

23. September 2013 Vince Cardell

Sunday 22 September 2013 saw the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences present the 65th Primetime Emmy. Steven Soderbergh’s film “Behind the Candelabra” had received 15 nominations for the world’s biggest TV prize, and ended up winning a total of 11 awards during the gala, which was hosted by Neil Patrick Harris.

The creative categories had been presented beforehand, with “Behind The Candelabra” being considered for eight awards:

“Outstanding Art Direction For a Miniseries or Movie“: Howard Cummings, Production Designer; Patrick M. Sullivan, Jr., Art Director; Barbara Munch Cameron, S.D.S.A., Set Decorator

“Outstanding Costumes For a Miniseries, Movie or a Special“: Ellen Mirojnick, Costume Designer; Robert Q. Mathews, Costume Supervisor

“Outstanding Hairstyling For a Miniseries or a Movie“: Marie Larkin, Department Head Hairstylist; Yvette Stone, Key Hairstylist; Kerrie Smith, Personal Hairstylist; Kay Georgiou, Personal Hairstylist

“Outstanding Makeup For a Miniseries or a Movie (Non-Prosthetic)“: Kate Biscoe, Department Head Makeup Artist; Deborah Rutherford, Assistant Department Head Makeup Artist; Deborah Lamia Denaver, Key Makeup Artist; Chrissie Beveridge, Personal Makeup Artist; Todd Kleitsch, Personal Makeup Artist

“Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup For a Series, Miniseries, Movie or a Special“: Kate Biscoe, Department Head Makeup Artist; Hiroshi Yada, Special Makeup Effects Artist; Jamie Kelman, Special Makeup Effects Artist; Stephen Kelley, Additional Makeup Effects Artist; Chrissie Beveridge, Personal Makeup Artist; Todd Kleitsch, Prosthetic Designer; Christien Tinsley, Prosthetic Designer

“Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing For a Miniseries or a Movie“: Mary Ann Bernard, Editor

“Outstanding Sound Mixing For a Miniseries or a Movie” Production Mixer; Larry Blake, Re-Recording Mixer; Thomas Vicari, Scoring Mixer

Given these good omens, it was no wonder it received three awards in the remaining categories. The “Outstanding Lead Actor In A Miniseries or a Movie” category saw Michael Douglas and Matt Damon pitted against one another, the former for his role as Liberace, and the latter for his role as Scott Thorson. The award went to Michael Douglas.

Cheyenne Jackson, who played Billy Leatherwood, was not nominated. Billy Leatherwood’s character is based on Liberace’s only protégé, Vince Cardell.

“Behind The Candelabra” was thus the undisputed winner at the 65th annual Emmy Awards.
